Nestled in the heart of Brașov County, Felmer is a place where history lingers in the ruins of an abandoned Saxon village. Some people still live here, among the skeletal remains of homes burned down long ago, their roofs missing, their walls blackened. They reside in what was once a thriving community, now reduced to scattered remnants of its former self.
One of the most significant landmarks of Felmer is its old school, originally founded by the Saxons around 1488. This school was later reconstructed at the beginning of the 20th century using materials salvaged from the demolished walls and towers of the village’s Evangelical church. This reconstruction was part of the last major renovation of the church and its annexes, an effort that sought to preserve the historical and cultural essence of the settlement.
Felmer’s fortified church stands as a testament to centuries of transformation. Initially built around 1250, it evolved over the years, incorporating defensive walls and bastions. These additions were designed to protect the community from invasions and external threats, marking Felmer as part of Transylvania’s vast network of fortified Saxon settlements. However, despite its historical significance, the village and its architectural heritage have fallen into a state of severe disrepair.
Today, the once-proud structures of Felmer stand abandoned, their grandeur eroded by time and neglect. The village’s cultural treasures are at risk of disappearing entirely, yet hope remains in the form of an organization dedicated to their restoration. Asociația Renascendis, a non-profit focused on heritage conservation, has taken on the challenge of breathing life back into Felmer.
“We aim to rebuild the community spirit while also protecting and repurposing cultural heritage for the benefit of local communities,” declares Asociația Renascendis. “The advantages of life in rural or small urban communities must be preserved, enhanced, and promoted. There can be no natural development in places where young people choose to leave due to a lack of favorable prospects.”
Through its efforts, Renascendis hopes to revive Felmer, not just as a historical site, but as a living, breathing community where past and future can coexist. However, the road to recovery is long, and the challenges are immense. The question remains: can the village of Felmer be saved before it fades into complete obscurity?
