Health Insurance House of Bucharest

On a quiet street in Bucharest, tucked away behind towering trees and shielded from the city’s relentless noise, stands an old house with a long-forgotten past. Built at the end of the 19th century, this architectural relic once served as the headquarters of the Health Insurance House of Bucharest (CASMB). For years, it was a place where people sought medical guidance and bureaucratic solutions. Today, however, it is a shadow of its former self—a haunting reminder of neglect and decay.

Abandoned for several years, the building has fallen into a state of irreversible ruin. The plaster peels away from its weathered walls, revealing the raw brick underneath, while the interior has been overtaken by filth and disorder. The once-functional rooms, formerly used as offices and medical consultation spaces, are now filled with discarded mattresses and debris. A thick layer of dust settles over everything, as if time itself has come to a standstill.

The remnants of its medical past are still visible. As in many old clinics, the walls remain half-covered in faded white and blue tiles, a last vestige of hygiene and sterility in an otherwise chaotic environment. Amidst the wreckage, a wooden staircase—remarkably intact despite the surrounding deterioration—pierces through the ceiling, leading to the upper floor. This staircase, worn smooth by decades of footsteps, is one of the few remaining elements that hint at the building’s former dignity.

The house was likely abandoned due to its worsening condition, no longer suitable for administrative use. Now, viewed from behind a rusted iron fence, it appears more like a haunted mansion from a gothic horror film than an institution that once served the public. The silence surrounding it is unsettling, broken only by the occasional rustling of leaves or the scurrying of unseen creatures within its crumbling walls.

Tragically, its fate was sealed on March 10, 2024, when a fire ravaged the structure. The wooden staircase and window frames—among the last architectural details preserving its charm—were most likely consumed by the flames. What remains now is little more than a charred shell, another piece of Bucharest’s history lost to time and negligence.

  4. Foarte faine cadre.
