Vila Cembra in Vatra Dornei

Posted on

Before 1890, the site of what is now Vila Cembra was home to Hanul Petru Rareș, one of the most renowned inns in the Vatra Dornei region. The inn played a crucial role in accommodating travelers, merchants, and locals alike, serving as a central hub for trade and social gatherings. However, with the development of restaurants and guesthouses in the area, its significance gradually declined. Despite its remarkable architectural style, the main building and its annexes—once used as stables and carriage parking—fell into disrepair.

By 1890, plans were underway to construct Hotel Oțelul II, leading to the demolition of the old inn and its outbuildings. The newly vacated land was soon transformed, and by 1895, a grand new structure emerged—today known as Vila Cembra. Initially operating as a hotel, the building quickly gained prominence, offering accommodations to visitors drawn to Vatra Dornei’s renowned mineral waters and scenic landscapes.

However, the outbreak of World War I in 1914 brought significant changes. The hotel was repurposed under military administration, serving as a strategic facility during the war. Following the conflict, the Romanian Orthodox Church Fund of Bukovina allocated the building for educational purposes, establishing Vatra Dornei’s first high school and gymnasium. Despite these efforts, financial instability led to the repeated closure of these institutions, and the building reverted to its original function as a hotel.

History repeated itself during World War II when the military once again requisitioned the villa. After the war, the newly nationalized property was repurposed as a rest home and later as a sanatorium, catering to those in need of medical recuperation. In 1963, reflecting a growing focus on public health and social welfare, the facility was converted into a sanatorium-school for children suffering from poliomyelitis, providing both medical care and education.

This mission continued until May 28, 1975, when a fully renovated facility was transferred to trade unions for use as a holiday retreat. Following the Romanian Revolution in 1990, the villa was renamed Cembra and became part of Sind-România – Vatra Dornei Branch, remaining under trade union administration. Today, Vila Cembra stands as a testament to the dynamic history of Vatra Dornei, embodying over a century of transformation, from a historic inn to a hotel, an educational institution, a military outpost, a medical facility, and finally, a retreat for leisure and relaxation.
